Chanel is the name of one of the most prominent fashion brands worldwide. I want to highlight Chanel’s innovation, especially because the brand was initiated by a woman.

The fashion industry is often perceived as gender-balanced, if not male-dominated, particularly when it comes to prestigious brands. Although fashion is consumed mostly by women, many of the top designers historically have been men.


Early Innovation with Jersey

Chanel introduced innovation in fashion more than once during her career as a business owner. One of her first breakthroughs was the use of a material not initially appealing to the market: jersey.

At the time, jersey was considered cheap and was used mainly for men’s underwear. Yet, Chanel transformed it into light-weight dresses. She began by making dresses not for the upper class, but for ordinary women — even those working for the bourgeois.

This was around 1910, an era that still carried traces of Victorian styles, as well as the perceived chic silhouettes of Edwardian fashion.


Liberation Through Style

Chanel’s designs worked to liberate women from the heavy, restrictive corsets common in that era. She introduced the flapper style, focusing on straight silhouettes and simple elegance.

Who does not own a simple black dress today? Chanel was the pioneer behind the Little Black Dress (LBD) in 1926. She demonstrated how a single, simple black dress could serve multiple occasions, becoming a wardrobe staple for women everywhere.

Throughout her career as a fashion revolutionary, Chanel produced unique styles that remain associated with her name:

  • The Chanel Jacket (1950s) – made from tweed with a timeless cut, still remade constantly under her brand.

  • The Quilted Handbag (1955) – practical yet elegant, with its signature chain strap.

  • Chanel No. 5 Perfume (1921) – one of the most iconic fragrances of all time.

  • Statement Accessories – layered pearls, bold costume jewelry, and the famous two-toned shoes.

Chanel’s design philosophy centered on style rather than fashion. One of her most famous quotes is: “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.”

She proved that elegance could be created from inexpensive or modest materials, if combined with the right style. Her approach communicated a woman who valued comfort, functionality, and simplicity — without sacrificing sophistication.

From the beginning of her career, Chanel emphasized the androgynous look. Her preference for straight cuts and masculine influences made her designs distinctive.
